Friends of Center Cemetery, is a nonprofit organization that was established in 1989. The group promotes the preservation of the Historic Center Cemetery (1709), which is on the National Register of Historic Places.
"Friends" has seen to the restoration of several stones in this cemetery. Among them is a table stone for Governor William Pitkin who died in 1789, Pomp Equality in 1824, and Rev. Woodbridge in 1746. The group has also undertaken the restoration of the 25 ft. tall Civil War monument erected in 1868.
A self-Guided Historical Walking Tour brochure is available at the information desk at the town hall.
Friends of Center Cemetery has programs throughout the year and participates in many town events. In the spring they have an annual "work day" and also invite the community and interested parties to come down and take a tour, help members reset or clean stones, or just simply stop by to say hello and ask questions.
Check the events page for the next scheduled work day. To become a member you can write to the following address: Friends of Center
